WHO WE ARE

The principal role of the Conservancy is to protect and preserve the declining stock of open, undeveloped land in the Village of Bratenahl in order to better manage development, maintain green space, and preserve the community's natural beauty.

The Bratenahl Land Conservancy was formed in the spring of 1996 as it became increasingly evident that Cleveland's most desirable and accessible community had become a developer's target. As speculative ventures consumed land and trees, Village government and the Bratenahl Community Foundation sought ways to discipline the development in a structured and sensitive manner. Thus the BLC came into being.

The Bratenahl Land Conservancy is a strategic initiative designed to secure key parcels of land and to sustain them for the benefit of the community. This Village is dedicated to residential living, devoid of the commercial, business, or industrial ventures that prevail elsewhere. Access to the lake shore, habitat for birds, and a green environment are essential elements of the Bratenahl experience. Bratenahl Village is a true treasure, a green and historic community nestled like an emerald along the shore of Lake Erie. Our residents cherish this, and expect to see it preserved. The Bratenahl Land Conservancy accepts this mandate.

In order to better accomplish its goal, the Bratenahl Land Conservancy became a charter member of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy on December 31, 2006. This new organization is a merger of 8 land conservancies with the purpose of preserving green space throughout the entire region defined by the chapters. This new, powerful entity brings with it a greater range of expertise, more regional thinking, and better access to state and federal funds and foundation grants.

Donations still form the bedrock of the financial burden necessary to purchase and protect land. The need still exists for concerned citizens to step forward and help. Monies donated for the preservation of land in Bratenahl can be earmarked specifically for that purpose. Monies can also be donated to the WRLC for the preservation of land in the region or to help pay for operating expense for WRLC.

Both the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Bratenahl Chapter of WRLC have been fully qualified as a tax- exempt organization under 501 ©(3). Gifts to both are tax deductible by the donor.
